Judicial Reforms Consultant Pays Courtesy Call on Deputy Chief Justice
(L-R): Mr. Tim Bisong, an international consultant on judicial reform affiliated with the African Commission with the Deputy Chief Justice Buteera
Earlier, Mr. Tim Bisong, an international consultant on judicial reform affiliated with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, from The Gambia paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Richard Buteera.
During their discussion, Justice Buteera emphasized the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), particularly Mediation. He shared insights from the Judiciary's recent Settlement Week where hundreds of disputes were resolved within a week-cases that would typically take much longer in regular court sessions.
The Deputy Chief Justice also discussed the potential of introducing ADR as a course unit in university programs to promote its practice and understanding among future legal professionals.
Mr. Bisong was in agreement with the proposal saying integrating new initiatives, such as ADR, into university curricula would help in advancing judicial reforms. This, he noted, would foster a shift in legal education and practice.
Mr. Bisong also encouraged the Deputy Chief Justice to explore the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in judgment writing, proposing Canada and Nigeria as benchmarks for integrating AI in judicial processes.
HW Allan Gakyaro, Personal Assistant to the DCJ, and Mr. Joseph Ssinabulya, the Principal Information Management Officer were present during the meeting.
Mr. Bisong's work is focused on strengthening legal systems, improving access to justice, and promoting human rights across African nations.
